Challenge
A low cost, industrial control system was required that had both a local human/machine interface and a remote monitoring and control capability. The system had to work in an environment where there may be no wifi/internet or cellular access. The system controls a heater based on the input from 3 temperature sensors.
Solution
An IoT industrial shield was used to control a 3 phase power relay for the heater. The device directly interfaced to the 3 temperature sensors. A touch screen was used to allow calibration and for the setting of thresholds, timers and operating mode. It also showed a history of the operating temperature. Lorawan was used to connect the device to the internet to allow monitoring and control via a windows, mac OS or mobile device.
Benefits
The installation successfully allowed the distillation process to monitored and controlled from any location via the Internet. It provided automatic control of the distillation to ensure the heating process stayed within the desired parameters. This provides significant time for small distilleries. A full history of the distillation process was produced for quality control.
